The Metropolitan Division's third-place New York Rangers travel to Winnipeg to take on the Central Division's sixth-place Jets. This matchup will be the first meeting between these two teams this season.
Can the Rangers stay hot, or will the Jets capture a home victory?
New York Riding Red-Hot Netminder
The New York Rangers enter this contest riding a two-game win streak. Their wins have come solely due to the Vezina Trophy-worthy play of goaltender Igor Shesterkin, whom I am presuming will get the night off against Winnipeg.
Though the goalie matchups are not confirmed yet, this game is the perfect opportunity for Shesterkin to get some rest as he has started 10 of the Rangers' last 11 games. Not only has Shesterkin been playing a ton lately, but New York has three much tougher matchups this week and will need him rested.
That means the projected goaltender for this matchup would be Alexandar Georgiev, who has had his share of difficulties lately. Over his last three starts, Georgiev has a troubling 0.837 save percentage and a 4.67 goals allowed average.
There were six or more total goals scored in all three of those games, and we could see a similar outcome against a powerful Jets offense. The Rangers' poor blue line play has been bailed out by Shesterkin all season as they currently rank 22nd in the league in 5-on-5 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA).
Jets Defense Holding Them Back
The Winnipeg Jets enter this contest following Friday night's 4-3 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars. This loss was yet another high-scoring affair for the Jets, who have now seen six or more total goals scored in nine of their last 12 games.
Much like New York, the Jets' defensive woes have been troubling all season. Winnipeg ranks 26th in the league in 5-on-5 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA) and 25th in average expected goal value of opposing 5-on-5 shot attempts.
On the flip side, the Jets offense has been terrific this season. Currently, Winnipeg ranks 11th in the league in 5-on-5 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF).
Winnipeg's offense has been even more impressive at home this season. Over their last five home games, the Jets are averaging 4.8 goals scored per game.
Rangers vs. Jets Pick
This play is partly predicated on Georgiev getting the start over Shesterkin. If Shesterkin does get the start, cashing out of this play is probably a smart option. I'm looking to take the over at 6, which is still available at some books. Get the latest odds for the game here.
That being said, I will be riding it out either way but the total will most likely jump to 6.5 if Georgiev is confirmed.
Pick: Over 6 (+100)
