The Central Division's second-place Minnesota Wild travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Metropolitan Division's fourth-place Capitals. This is the second meeting between these two teams this season as the Wild won the first matchup 3-2 at home.
Will the Wild find success once again, or can the Capitals get their revenge on home ice?
Minnesota Wild
The Minnesota Wild enter this contest on the second half of a road back-to-back following Saturday night's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Minnesota could be in a vulnerable spot in this matchup as this will also be their third game in the last four days.
Since It is the second half of a back-to-back, we can expect to see Cam Talbot get the start between the pipes for Minnesota. While Talbot has had some success recently, these performances have all been on home ice.
On the road, Talbot's numbers take a dip this season as he is just 12-8 away from home. Talbot has allowed four or more goals in each of his last four road starts, posting a troubling 0.859 save percentage and a 4.50 goals allowed average over that span.
While the Wild have been gathering a ton of wins recently, they have all come at home. This season, the Wild are just 17-16 away from the Xcel Energy Center and are just 3-6 over their last nine games as a road underdog.
Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals are at the point in their season where they need all the wins they can get, especially when having the advantage of playing on home ice. Currently, Washington holds on to the second wild card spot, which means they would have to play against the powerhouse Florida Panthers in the first round.
However, the Capitals are just five points behind the Bruins for the first wild card spot and are trying to claw their way up to that position. Catching the Wild on the second half of a road back-to-back and playing their third game in four days is a great spot for Washington to collect two points.
Washington has been in good form recently, having won nine of its last 13 games. Vitek Vanecek is the projected starting goaltender and has been in great form recently.
Over his last 10 starts, Vanecek is 7-3 with a .910 save percentage over that stretch. The Capitals' offense has also been dialed in recently, as they're averaging 3.77 goals scored per game over their last 13 contests.
Wild vs. Capitals Pick
While Minnesota is definitely a better team, they are underdogs in this matchup for good reasons. They are in a letdown spot following a big win over the Hurricanes, on the second half of a road back-to-back, and playing their third game in four days.
The Capitals could really use two points, and this is a good spot for them to collect those.
