The Central Division's second-place Minnesota Wild travel to Edmonton to take on the Pacific Division's third-place Oilers. It will be the second meeting this season between these two teams as Minnesota won the first contest 4-1 back in December.
Will we see another win from the Wild, or can the Oilers get their revenge on home ice tonight?
Can Wild Solve Road Woes?
The Minnesota Wild enter on a two-game losing streak and have lost three of their last five. Minnesota will look to bounce back from Friday's 6-2 home loss to the Florida Panthers.
The Wild opened as a road underdog before the line quickly shifted to a pick'em. In games where Minnesota has opened as a road underdog, it is just 3-5.
It is no secret that the Wild have been much better at home than on the road, as 11 of their 16 losses this season have come away from the Xcel Energy Center. Minnesota's projected starting goalie tonight is Cam Talbot, who is had a tough go this week.
Talbot has lost his last two starts, posting a troubling 0.859 SV% and GAA of 4.5 over those two starts. A road matchup against the surging Oilers team is not an ideal spot for him to figure it out.
Oilers Remain Unbeaten Under Woodcroft
As I just mentioned, the Oilers have been surging lately since they fired Dave Tippett and promoted Jay Woodcroft to be the new interim head coach. Under Woodcroft, the Oilers are 5-0 and have an average winning margin of 2.8 goals over that stretch.
Edmonton is back to playing good, loose hockey, and the results are amplifying just that. Superstar Connor McDavid has found his rhythm once again under Woodcroft, posting 10 points over the five-game win streak.
Mike Smith is projected to start for Edmonton, and he has also found a rhythm recently. Smith has won his last three straight starts and has a superb 0.940 SV% over that stretch.
Edmonton has had a dynamite offense reignited by the coaching change, and facing a struggling Talbot is a good spot to keep the goals pouring in.
Wild vs. Oilers Pick
I think the Wild are a better team, and I think they will make a deeper run in the playoffs than Edmonton. That being said, Edmonton is just playing a different brand of hockey right now under Woodcroft and will look to keep it rolling tonight.
Tonight is a good revenge spot for Edmonton following their loss to Minnesota in December, and I think they will get It done.
Pick: Edmonton Oilers ML (-110) | Play up to (-125)
