The Cardinals Counter with a solid contributor this season in Kyle Gibson, who enters with a 7-5 record, a 4.22 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 136 1/3 innings. One encouraging meter for is Gibson's last outing, where he was very solid against the Brewers, allowing two earned runs over 5 1/3 frames of work. Most of this season, his ability to get through lineups without yielding much damage has been quite solid, thereby marking him as an option one can trust to keep the game's score low. Kyle Gibson shows a high Whiff% (26.4%) and a moderate Swing% (43.4%), indicating that he induces a good number of swings and misses. The Padres will counter with Randy Vazquez.
Although Vazquez has shown flashes of brilliance this season, he will be teamed with a bullpen that really slams the door shut after the sixth inning with regularity. All trends for how the Padres perform on the road lean toward Under, with more total games going under than over when away from San Diego, an indication of a struggle to score on the road. The Cardinals also trend toward the Under with recent games going under in 7 of the last 10. This is part of a larger trend for them of lower-scoring affairs, particularly against teams with decent pitching. We find that the Cardinals rank 24th in runs per game (4.09), 23rd in batting average (.245), and 20th in OPS (.697).
These rankings give a below-average performance along offense. The Cardinals have a better home record, still not hitting as well at home, with their low home AF of 4.33. The Cardinals were shut out in their last game, indicating recent struggles in scoring runs, 0-1 against Minnesota.
This season, the Padres' bullpen yields a 2.38 ERA in 328.1 innings. With the backup of a 1.09 WHIP, it shows that they can prevent any one of scoring base runners, thus killing most of opponents' offenses. This bullpen has been on fire lately: in the last three games, it has set a phenomenal ERA of 1.95 and WHIP of 0.80 over 27.2 innings. This just makes them a danger as they begin to peak at the right time.
Relievers like Sean Reynolds has been lights-out, not allowing an earned run and maintaining a solid WHIP at 1.07. Meanwhile, Adam has been sparkling, posting an earned run average of 0.82, and he allows extraordinarily few base runners with a WHIP of just 0.64 through eleven innings of work, surrendering only one earned run.
On the other hand, the Cardinal bullpen has been effective—though not dominant—compared to the Padre one. They boast a decent 3.27 ERA in 385.2 innings to go with a 1.17 WHIP but more on the hot side recently, particularly in their previous three contests, they allowed just a 1.69 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in those 21.2 innings.
Among prime arms for the Cardinals, Ryan Helsley's ERA is 2.47, and his WHIP is 1.21 over 54.2 innings so far, the last three innings to be prize-free. Another trustworthy pitcher is A. Kittredge, whose ERA is 1.38 and whose WHIP is 1.13 to strongly position himself in the bound box when it comes to selectivity in high leverage situations, J. It only reinforces the capacity of this bullpen to keep games low-scoring when you add in Romero's ERA of 1.38 over 51.2 innings and no earned runs in his last 3.

SD is top 8 in BA in the L7 & L15 days & happen to hit MUCH better away (.282) vs RHP (.275). Today, they’re away vs K. Gibson who’s a RHP allowing a .306 BA at home & a .275 BA at night. He’s already allowed 27 hits for 15 runs this month. SD will definitely get theirs in the early innings.
STL bats have not been great, but this is a great bounce back spot coming off of a series W vs MIN & facing R. Vasquez who really struggles away allowing a .343 BA & a .316 BA when pitching at night. He’s also allowing a .382 BA to lefties which there will be 5 of in this expected lineup.
Both bullpens are good with decent health so I’m isolating this to the F5.
