In that case, this is bad news for Patrick Corbin. Corbin has been shaky lately—he gave up 18 earned runs in his three previous starts, pegging him at a cumbersome 5.98 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP across 24 starts this season. His ground ball rate is solid at 46%, but his relatively low strikeout rate of only 16.8% and a home run rate of 1.31 per nine innings show his vulnerability. One would think, too, with a 4.61 FIP that he's due for slight improvement, yet Corbin remains the principle weak link in this rotation for the Nationals. On the other side, Aaron Nola has been more reliable, but he's not without his faults. For Nola, a 3.60 ERA and 1.15 WHIP are passable, backed by a solid strikeout rate at 23.1% and a respectable walk rate of 6.2%. His home run rate is as alarming as Corbin's, though, coming in at 1.34 per nine innings, which could be problematic given the Phillies' bullpen issues of late—5.06 ERA during their past ten games. The over is an attractive play here, with both pitchers allowing the long ball this season and Philadelphia's offense due to feast off Washington weaknesses. The Nationals' offense will do more than enough to hang a few runs on Nola, given his recent form. Finally, touting the final element with the Phillies bullpen less than stellar, look for both teams to chip in to the scoreboard in forcing the total over.
