After upsetting SMU in Week 2 as 12.5-point road dogs, BYU showcased their defensive ability, holding the Mustangs to just 261 total yards and forcing three turnovers. While BYU's offense wasn’t at its peak, with QB Jake Retzlaff throwing two interceptions, the defense stepped up when it mattered most. Retzlaff, despite the turnovers, still threw for 202 yards and a touchdown, while showing mobility with 35 yards on the ground. His ability to move the ball effectively against a much stronger SMU defense will likely make the difference against a struggling Wyoming squad. BYU’s offense, which exploded in Week 1 against Southern Illinois for 527 yards and 41 points, should find easier sledding against Wyoming's defense. The Cowboys' unit, which allowed 499 total yards to Arizona State and couldn’t slow down the Idaho Vandals in Week 2, looks overmatched here. Wyoming’s offense, meanwhile, has been abysmal, averaging just 194 total yards per game, the second-worst mark in the nation. Junior QB Evan Svoboda has been ineffective, completing just 10 of 24 passes for 126 yards last week. His struggles in leading an offense that’s been unable to get into rhythm—compounded by the Cowboys' inability to capitalize on favorable field position—puts them in a very tough spot against BYU's solid defense. Furthermore, Wyoming’s rushing attack, led by DJ Jones, has failed to carry the load in two games, and against a BYU defense that’s coming off a dominant performance, it’s unlikely to break through. The Cowboys’ struggles in the red zone and their turnover woes highlight their inefficiencies, and those issues have led them to an 0-2 start ATS. BYU’s superior defense should smother a Wyoming offense that has yet to find its footing, and their offense, led by Retzlaff, will have a much easier time against a defense that’s been prone to big plays and sloppy mistakes.
