Spurs vs. Mavericks Preview

The Spurs dropped Friday night's game against the Lakers in thrilling fashion, and now head across the state to play Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks open the game as double-digit favorites but are just 4-7-1 ATS and 3-6 ATS as a favorite this season. Let's dive into the matchup.

The Mavericks have the seventh-best Adjusted Net Rating (+3.2) and lead a balanced attack despite being just 5-7 in overall record. The Mavericks have listed PJ Washington (knee) as doubtful, Luka Doncic (knee) as Probable, and they've removed Kyrie Irving (shoulder) from the report entirely. The Spurs have not been as good despite a similar 6-7 record with the 20th-ranked Adjusted Net (-1.6), per Dunks and Threes.

These two teams faced off in the season opener and Dallas won 120-109. However, the Spurs were sloppy with the basketball and turned the ball over 19 times. Additionally, Dallas outscored the Spurs 57-36 from beyond the arc. While the turnovers may remain, the Spurs actually shoot 3s at a higher frequency than the Mavericks this season and make more per game than the Mavericks as well.

One of the primary issues for the Spurs has been their struggle to keep their opponents playing in the halfcourt and allowing them to get out in transition. Dallas scored the seventh-most points per 100 possessions on fast break opportunities, while the Spurs allow the sixth-most, per NBA Advanced Stats. When you couple in the fact that this is the second game of a back-to-back, their third game in four days ( and fourth game in six days), it's an easy letdown spot for the Spurs where the play can get sloppy if they're a bit tired.

Spurs vs. Mavericks Prediction

This is situationally a bad spot for the Spurs, and I could see the Mavericks offense humming against this defense that's a bit overrated because of Wembanyama. The Mavs have dropped four in a row and I expect to see them coming out strong offensively here.

As for the Spurs, their three-point shooting allows them to stay in ball games and continue to put up points. I'll grab over 228.5 for my best bet. If I was putting together a SGP, I'd grab Klay over 3.5 three-pointers, Wemby over 2.5 three-pointers, Mavericks Moneyline, and Over 228.5.

Best Bet: Over 228.5 (-110)
Same Game Parlay: Mavericks ML, Over 228.5, Klay Thompson Over 3.5 Three-Pointers, Victor Wembanyama Over 2.5 Three-Pointers (+499)
