Maryland vs Oregon College Basketball Betting Preview

A very intriguing Big Ten matinee tips off on Sunday between two conference title contenders coming off a loss.

Maryland looked to be a juggernaut until its perimeter shooting let it down against Washington, losing outright as a six-point favorite.

Oregon, one of the favorites to win the Big Ten, got smacked by a young Illinois team flying across the country by an eye-popping 32 points.

Both teams are looking for bounce backs.

The Terps’ early success this season has been fueled by their twin tower lineup of Julian Reese and Derik Queen. That tandem has given them a size edge against just about every team in the country.

But Oregon has plenty of size to throw at the Terps' bigs and could find success on the perimeter on the offensive end with Nate Bittle’s ability to step out and hit the 3. A true chess match will ensue, as Maryland looks to exploit the so-so Ducks rim defense, and Oregon looks to stretch the Terps' giants away from the hoop.

Maryland’s size might deter Oregon from executing its normal offensive game plan – that is playing through the post. Bittle will be more likely to float to the perimeter, which will be a boom-or-bust proposition.

Guard play will be paramount for the Ducks, and sophomore sensation Jackson Shelstad will need to be on his P’s and Q’s when handling the rock against an athletic and quick Maryland perimeter. Shelstad can be a superhero one night and an afterthought the next.

How will the Terps shoot in this game? They regressed hard against Washington after lighting the nets on fire to start the year. Ja’Kobi Gillespie, Rodney Rice and Selton Miguel have all shown the ability to catch fire.

The Ducks generally pack it in more defensively, versus extending and overselling to take away the long ball. Opportunities will be there for Maryland from outside the arc, especially with its interior path having a little more resistance than usual against the Ducks' frontline.

These teams are rated about the same in analytics, but one could argue Maryland’s results have been more impressive – and more sustainable. The Terps lost a close one to Marquette and dropped a close one at Purdue. They also beat a surging Villanova team at a neutral site and have blown out bad competition (and Ohio State).

Oregon has notched impressive wins, but the Ducks have come from behind in just about every game they’ve played this season. They've consistently played with fire and have been lucky not to have been burned more than once.

Finally, Illinois smashed them.

The Ducks have the home floor edge and possibly the slight advantage in the stylistic matchup. However, this Terps team could flat out be better, and the travel from Seattle to Eugene isn’t a major chore.

Look for Maryland to keep this one even and have a great shot at winning outright.
