The St. Louis Cardinals head to San Diego to open a three-game set against the Padres on Tuesday night. The Cardinals have jumped out to a comfortable lead in the NL Central, while the Padres are stilly jockeying for position in the NL wild-card race.

In a series that could have major playoff implications, the Padres find themselves bordering on "must win" territory as the Cardinals look to make a statement in a potential playoff preview.

Adam Wainwright will make the start for the Cards and he'll be taking on Mike Clevinger of the San Diego Padres in what should be one of the more appealing matchups in Tuesday night's slate.

Road Woes For Cardinals' Wainwright

Wainwright has put together another solid season in the twilight of his career, but he is a considerably weaker pitcher on the road. He's posted an ERA, FIP and xFIP all over 4, which gives us a clear idea of who he is on the road: a fringe average pitcher.

He'll be backed by a bullpen that has struggled to find consistency this season. Over the past two weeks, they've been one of the weaker units in terms of FIP and ERA and that has been a theme for them all season.

The Cards' offense has been a solid group in 2022 led by Paul Goldschmidt. They come into Tuesday night's matchup with a 112 team wRC+ against RHP on the road over the past two weeks, good for 14th in MLB. However, heading into a playoff-type matchup, look for the Cards to turn things up a little on Tuesday.

Can Clevinger Cook at Home?

Clevinger looks to keep the Cards' offense on the ground Tuesday night, but he has really labored in the second half of the season. He's posted a 5.33 ERA with a 6.13 FIP and a 5.45 xFIP, which is not how you want to head into the postseason.

He is in his stronger situation at home, but even then his peripherals are also full of red flags.

However, he is backed by a Padres' bullpen that has found consistency in the second half and has been on a nice run as of late. If Clevinger finds himself in trouble, there's a good chance he'll be on a short leash Tuesday night.

The Padres' offense has also been in a little bit of a slump as they have posted an exactly 100 team wRC+ at home against RHP over the past two weeks, which is 16th in MLB.

Cardinals-Padres Pick

Considering the pitching matchup, it feels like the total of 8 may be a little low. Clevinger has really struggled lately and Wainwright is mortal on the road.

While both offenses come in around league average, there's too much individual talent on each side to not take advantage of an offense-friendly pitcher matchup. Additionally, the Cardinals' bullpen is so unreliable, they should also be factored into the scoring situation as well.

The over is presently around -110 and that's a great value considering there are two capable offenses opposing to pitchers in unfavorable situations. If you can snag it as close to plus money as possible, the over should be the play at -120 or better.

Pick: Over 8 -110
