The New York Yankees look to complete the sweep of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon and improve upon their MLB-best 43-16 record.
The Cubs hope to take at least one game of this series before heading home to open a four-game series against the San Diego Padres.
Keegan Thompson puts his 6-1 season record up for the Cubs against Jameson Taillon in the series finale. Both pitchers have put together solid numbers this season, but can the Cubs leave the Bronx with a win?
Cubs Must Step Up to Avoid the Sweep
Probably not. While Thompson may seem like the Cubs' best chance of stealing a road victory against the best team in baseball, a deeper look shows he may not be up to the task.
The road has been Thompson's much weaker split so far in 2022 as he's posted a 5.40 ERA and an even worse 7.06 FIP over 18 and 1/3 innings. Although he may be due for some positive regression in this game, it's hard to see him regressing all that much.
Additionally, the Cubs' bullpen is in the middle of one of their worst stretches of the season as they've fallen into the bottom third of the league in both ERA and FIP.
The Cubs' offense has also left a lot to be desired as they've only posted a 96 team wRC+ on the road against RHP over the past three weeks, which is 16th in MLB.
Yankees Look to Keep Rolling
The Yankees are firing on all cylinders right now. Frankly, they've been so good for a majority of the year. Their offense is highly rated in most significant categories, and their pitching has been stellar as of late.
Taillon brings a 2.31 ERA and a 2.53 FIP at home into Sunday's start. In his last home start, he flirted with a perfect game, setting the bar incredibly high for Sunday's start.
He's also backed by one of the best bullpens in baseball which continues to pitch well despite missing some key contributors.
Cubs-Yankees Pick
It's very hard to bet against the Yankees, and it will continue to be hard to bet against them because they are unequivocally the best team in baseball right now. Although Taillon is not the team's ace, you could make an argument that he'd statistically be the ace of more than half of the pitching staffs in MLB.
The Cubs are 4-6 over their last 10 games and 12-15 on the road. The Yankees are 9-1 in their last 10 and 25-7 at home. Things just don't look good for the Cubs. The Yankees' moneyline is approaching -300 territory, so the best bet here is the runline. If you can grab it at -1.5 in the -130 range, go for it. If it moves to -2.5, it may still be tempting. Why not?
Pick: Yankees RL -1.5 (-125)
