The Cleveland Guardians snapped a four-game losing streak with a victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday. Now, they look clinch a series victory while continuing to fend off the MinnesotaTwins and Chicago White Sox for the AL Central lead on Tuesday.
With the AL wild-card race getting increasingly out of reach for any AL Central team, the Guardians need to continue to add on the wins in Kansas City before they head to Minnesota for a pivotal three-games series.
Shane Bieber gets the start for the Guardians. Kris Bubic will try to play spoiler for the Royals as they look to take advantage of a Guardians team that is 3-7 over their last 10 games.
Guardians' Offense Slumping
The Guardians couldn't have picked a worse time to get into a funk. On the other hand, they couldn't have found a better time to run into the Royals.
The main reason the Guardians have slumped is because their offense, which has been excellent this season, has hit a rough patch. Overall, the Guardians have been one of the better offenses in the league this season, but over the past two weeks they've struggled.
Making matters worse is they have been much weaker against LHP this season than RHP. They are set to take on Bubic who is erratic, but also has flashed some good stuff at times.
Bieber looks to keep the Guardians on track and he has been much stronger on the road this season than he has been at home. Over 97 road innings, Bieber has posted a 2.88 ERA and a 2.87 FIP.
Royals Hopeful For Bubic
The Royals are obviously a team in transition, but they are also much closer to being a .500 team at home than they are on the road. Their 32-38 home record is nothing to write home about, but they are clearly much more comfortable at Kauffman Stadium.
Bubic does not seem to have that same level of comfort, however. His ERA is a shade under six and his FIP is approaching five at home. For whatever reason, he has not experienced the same home field advantage his rotation mates have experienced.
Additionally, the Royals' bullpen is one of the most reliable units in baseball. Even if Bubic can keep the Royals in the game, the bullpen may just as easily pitch them right back out of the game.
Guardians-Royals Pick
Considering how much the Guardians have to play for as the season winds down, these are must win games in Kansas City. Bieber has been the leader of the Guardians' rotation this year, but historically September is one of his least productive months of the season.
However, getting to face the Royals in Kansas City should help him buck that trend. Meanwhile, Bubic may be in line to benefit from a Guardians' offense that seems to be pressing down the stretch.
The under for the first five innings is set at 3.5 at +100 odds and that seems to be a good value for two offenses that are presently struggling. While Bubic may be unreliable, this is a good time to fade the Guards offense. Play this if it stays in plus money.
Pick: F5 under 3.5 +100
