The New York Mets fell to the San Diego Padres in Game 3 of their Wild Card series on Sunday, eliminating the Mets from the playoffs and giving the Padres a matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, Padres fans weren't the only ones celebrating the victory, as sportsbooks were some of the biggest victors based on the result.
The Mets represented one of the biggest liabilities in the World Series and National League pennant market for most books, and at BetMGM, the Mets were the biggest NL liability and the second-biggest World Series liability.
They accounted for 11.1% of the betting tickets and 12.1% of the handle at a decently long price throughout the year, so a Mets title would have resulted in hefty payouts.
Additionally, the Mets had accrued 19.2% of the wagers and 20.8% of the handle in the NL title race, which is more than double the number of tickets that the Padres had received.
Traveling up in New York, you can get to the Bronx, where the Yankees are unsurprisingly the biggest World Series liability in the market.
The Yankees will take on the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Divisional Series, and they're currently tied for the third-shortest odds in the World Series market at +500.
The Dodgers are the title favorite at +275, while the Astros come in second at +350. The Braves are tied with the Yankees in third at +500.
San Diego (+1000), the Philadelphia Phillies (+1000), the Seattle Mariners (+1200) and the Guardians (+1600) round out the World Series market.
