Thursday NRFI Pick
Matchup | Luis Garcia (Astros) vs. Josh Winder (Twins) |
First Pitch | 3:30 p.m. ET |
On Thursday, we'll attack two of the worst first-inning hitting teams in the MLB, the Astros and Twins.
Luis Garcia is off to a hot start in 2022, going 4-1 to the NRFI. He has allowed only three hits and one walk to 19 total first-inning batters. He has also struck out seven while limiting his first-inning opponents to a .167 batting average.
Luis Garcia is 2-0 to the NRFI against the Twins since 2020. As result, Garcia has had some success against the Twins batters:
- Max Kepler: 0-for-3
- Alex Krilloff: 0-for-2
- Gary Sanchez: 0-for-2
- Gio Urshela: 0-for-1
The Twins' first-inning woes continue. Since April 15th, they are 27th in the majors when it comes to the first-inning team batting average at home. In 40 plate appearances, they have only six hits paired with 11 strikeouts.
Josh Winder is the Twins' seventh overall prospect. In 22 innings pitched, he has accumulated 20 strikeouts and has started his young NRFI career off hot, going 2-0 to the NRFI. He hasn’t allowed a single hit or walk to any of the six first-inning batters he has faced.
The Astros have also struggled to hit on the road in first innings. Since April 15th, in 40 plate appearances they have only three hits along with 14 strikeouts. They also have the worst first-inning road team batting average at .086.
In the last week, clean-up hitters Yordan Alvarez and Yuli Gurriel are hitting a combined 3-for-29 with 11 strikeouts. Against right-handed starting pitchers, Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve are hitting just .196 and .167 in 2022.
Look for these first inning bats to continue to slump. Take the NRFI between the Astros and Twins.
As always, six outs to glory…
