College Football Bad Beats, Week 8
Cincinnati Spread vs. Temple
- The Line: Cincinnati +3/+3.5
- The Score: Cincinnati 17, Temple 10
- Time Left: 4 minutes, 12 seconds
- Final Score: Temple 24, Cincinnati 17
There wasn't a rogue horrific play that led to a bad beat, but the entire body of work qualifies here. Cincinnati (+3 and +3.5) was covering for most of the game, but got burned by overtime.
Temple raced out to a 10-0 lead before its offense went silent for the next 53 minutes or so of game time. That is until the final minute, when Temple capped off a seven play, 75-yard drive to tie it 17-17.
The Owls scored a touchdown in overtime to make it 24-17. After a first-play first down on the Bearcats' following possession, their next three plays were: 11-yard loss, 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and an interception to seal the game.
Bowling Green-Ohio Over
- The Total: 66.5
- The Score: Ohio 49, Bowling Green 14
- Time Left: 4 minutes, 12 seconds
- Final Score: Ohio 49, Bowling Green 14
Ohio scored to make it 49-14 with about 10 minutes left. Just one more score, and the game goes over.
Bowling Green had a five-play drive, then punted it back to Ohio with seven minutes left. The Bobcats ran the ball, and ran it some more to drain the clock.
Ohio ran in a nine-yard touchdown with about three minutes left, but had it called back by holding. Two plays later, the Bobcats went for it on fourth down and got it, but running back David Burroughs got knocked out of bounds at the 3-yard line. Ohio took a knee on the next two plays to end the game and keep it under 63.
Kansas-Texas Tech Under
- The Total: 59
- The Score: Texas Tech 48, Kansas 9
- Time Left: 11 seconds
- Final Score: Texas Tech 48, Kansas 16
Another week, another Kansas game going over in the last 10 or so seconds.
Texas Tech almost hit this over by itself, but Kansas did its part with an 18-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds remaining to push the total past 59.
East Carolina Spread
- The Line: UCF -21.5
- The Score: UCF 37, ECU 10
- Time Left: 6 minutes, 14 seconds
- Final Score: UCF 37, ECU 10
ECU fair caught a punt with about six minutes left and the backdoor to cover +21.5 wide open.
The Pirates marched all the way down to the UCF 3-yard line, where they had first-and-goal. The next four plays:
- Run for no gain
- Incomplete
- Sack
- Incomplete
UCF took over and picked up two first downs to end the game and cover.
Ohio State-Purdue Under
- The Line: 68
- The Score: Purdue 21, Ohio State 6
- Time Left: Start of 4th Quarter
- Final Score: Purdue 49, Ohio State 20
If I told you Ohio State scored 20 points and the Buckeyes game against Purdue went over the total of 68, would you believe me? Good.
The two teams combined for six touchdowns and 42 points in the fourth quarter, capped off by a Purdue pick six with two minutes left. Purdue led 21-6 entering the fourth.
Boilermakers wide receiver Rondale Moore had broken off an absurd touchdown run just prior.
This total opened at 64 and got bet up as high as 69.5 on Friday afternoon before getting hammered down to 65 in the lead up to the game.
If you got a 69.5, congrats.
