As we approach the end of September, plenty of defenses have a solid case for being the most chaotic in college football.
Three teams are tied for the most tackles for loss: USC, James Madison and Texas State. No team is swatting balls out of the air like San Diego State, which now has 37 passes defensed on the season with an average of 7.4 per game. East Carolina and Western Kentucky have been the most fortunate with their opponents fumbling 13 times and each team recovering a nation-leading seven fumbles.
These Havoc Rankings take a look at both sides of the ball to determine the most aggressive defenses and disciplined offenses to trust when investing money at the window.
Havoc is defined defensively as the summation of passes defensed, forced fumbles and tackles for loss divided by the number of plays. Conversely, Havoc Allowed looks at the offensive side to count interceptions, fumbles and tackles for loss allowed.
Leading the charge offensively is Penn State, as the Nittany Lions have yet to throw an interception while allowing just 17 tackles for loss.
Kansas is the top dog on the defensive side, thanks to 25 pass breakups, seven fumble recoveries and 35 tackles for loss.
