LAS VEGAS — Super Bowl 53 could potentially be Rob Gronkowski's final NFL game and sportsbooks in Las Vegas are hoping that it isn't a fairytale ending.
According to sources at MGM if Gronkowski hauls in over 3.5 catches it will be a five-figure loss for the sportsbook. If the 29-year-old scores a touchdown or wins MVP, which opened at 40-1 and has since moved to 30-1, it would be bad news for the book.
Caesars Palace also told The Action Network that bettors are betting the Over on Gronkowski's props there as well.
This makes sense given the narrative around Gronkowski. The Patriots legend is obviously a fan favorite and bettors would like to see him go off into the sunset with a great performance.
Bookmakers hate happy endings.
Other Noteworthy Action
MGM also reported that they, unsurprisingly, are seeing a record amount of action on props for this Super Bowl.
One bettor at the shop played $230,000 across three props: Longest Field Goal Under 47.5 yards, $85,000 on second-quarter under 14.5 points and $82,500 on the "Yes" side of the "Will there be a score in the final 3 minutes of the fourth quarter.
Bettors there have also hammered the "Yes" side of the 2-point conversion prop and the book reports that that prop will be a sizable five-figure decision.
Over at the Westgate they will be hoping that the quarterbacks take care of the throwing.
"If more than 2.5 guys throw a pass we're gonna lose quite a bit," Derek Wilkinson of the Westgate reported. "It will be a decent five-figure decision."
