There were a few wild games in the MLB last night, including a Giants comeback against the Padres that was thwarted in the ninth and a Yankees–Mariners game that featured some absurd moments.
On the National League side of things, it was almost a nightmare evening for the Padres, who were in desperate need of a victory after five consecutive losses and back-to-back shutouts.
It seemed as though things were going well for San Diego, as it held a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth. However, newly-acquired closer Josh Hader couldn't put a bow on the game, and the Giants scored three runs to tie up the contest.
Then came the bottom of the ninth, when Manny Machado came to the plate with two men on and one out.
He proceeded to launch a ball into left field, saving the Padres and ending the game that should never have been in that position.
For Machado, a player who was as low as +213 to win the NL MVP earlier in the season, you would think that this could be a key moment for his campaign.
That's not the case, however, as the third baseman still sits around +2500 to win the award, just about where he was prior to the game.
The favorite remains Paul Goldschmidt, who has been in pole position for months now. He's listed at -145 to take home his first MVP.
Austin Riley (+425) slots in at second, while Freddie Freeman (+700) is the only other player sitting below +1000.
With just under two months to play in the season, it appears the award is Goldschmidt's to lose, and if anyone can challenge him, it'll be the above duo.
