Cardinals vs Red Sox Preview, Predictions
Right-hander Erick Fedde takes the mound for the Cardinals on Friday, and he should serve as a strong candidate to back. Fedde was brilliant in his first start of the season, allowing just one run on two hits through six innings.
St. Louis won that game 5-1, and a similar result could be in store Friday.
Fedde’s success in that opening outing should not come as a surprise, given his performance in 2024. Through 31 starts, the right-hander posted a 3.30 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.
His underlying metrics were equally strong, as he ranked in the top half of the league in xERA, average exit velocity, walk rate, barrel rate and hard-hit rate. Following Fedde is a trustworthy bullpen.
Last season, the Cardinals’ relief staff ranked in the top 10 in ERA, FIP and xFIP.
Perhaps the biggest reason to back St. Louis at plus money is that right-hander Walker Buehler gets the ball for the Red Sox. He has not been the same since missing all of 2023 due to a second Tommy John surgery.
Two Tommy John surgeries are typically a death sentence for a pitcher’s career, and that appears to be the case for Buehler. He started 16 games upon returning in 2024, posting a 1-6 record with a 5.38 ERA and 1.55 WHIP.
His underlying metrics were equally poor, as Buehler ranked in the 16th percentile in xERA, xBA and strikeout rate. That lack of success has continued into 2025.
In his first start of the campaign against the Texas Rangers, Buehler surrendered four runs on seven hits in under five innings. Boston lost 4-3.
Cardinals vs Red Sox Moneyline Prediction
There are plenty of reasons to like St. Louis at plus money in this matchup. Not only does it have the pitching edge, but it also boasts the hitting edge.
To begin 2025, the Cardinals rank in the top four in the league in runs per game, batting average, slugging percentage, OPS and home runs. Meanwhile, Boston does not rank in the top half of the league in any of those five key categories.
Finally, St. Louis has won five of the past six meetings between these two teams.
Pick: Cardinals ML (+126 | Play to +120)
Moneyline
As mentioned, I'm betting Cardinals ML at +126.
Run Line (Spread)
I also like the Cardinals to cover, but I think there is more value in their moneyline.
Over/Under
I lean toward the Over, but I would rather just back St. Louis to win this game at plus money.
