Well, NASCAR tried, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Rain in Talladega, Ala. has postponed Sunday’s YellaWood 500 until Monday at 1 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
NASCAR made multiple attempts to dry the track on Sunday, but persistent rain simply made it too difficult to get the race started.
Talladega Superspeedway does not have lights, which certainly didn’t help matters either.
NASCAR often has the luxury of delaying races long into the night in the hopes of finding a dry enough window to get started under the lights.
Another factor working against NASCAR is that Talladega is the series’ largest oval at 2.66 miles, which is a lot of track to try before sending cars upwards of 190 mph screaming down the straights in large packs.
It’s unfortunate that the race could not get started on Sunday because the next few days don’t look great in Talladega, either.
NASCAR at Talladega Monday Weather Forecast
According to the National Weather service, there is a 70% chance of rain on Monday; 90% chance on Tuesday; 80% chance on Wednesday; and 40% chance on Thursday.
Whenever NASCAR is able to get the YellaWood 500 started, the race will be official as soon as it hits halfway, which would be 94 of the scheduled 188 laps.
At the time of the delay, Denny Hamlin is your race favorite at 9-1 odds, followed by Joey Logano, Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney all listed at 10-1.
