Victor Wembanyama was in a neck-and-neck race with Chet Holmgren for Rookie of the Year honors for the early part of the year. However, Wembanyama is running away with it now thanks to performances like the one he authored Monday night.
Wembanyama recorded a triple-double in San Antonio’s 122-99 win over the Raptors, notching 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks in only 29 minutes. He became only the fourth rookie in NBA history to record a triple-double with blocks, joining Spurs legend David Robinson, Ralph Sampson and Mark Eaton. He’s the first rookie to do so in a whopping 34 years.
Wembanyama also dished out five dimes in San Antonio’s rout of Toronto. As a result, he became the first player since Hakeem Olajuwon in 1996 to record at least 20 points, 10 blocks and five assists in a single game.
Holmgren was the favorite to win Rookie of the Year when the calendar flipped to 2024, listed at -250 while Wembanyama was +150. However, Wembanyama is a massive favorite at this point at -800 while Holmgren is second at +700, according to FanDuel. Brandon Miller is a distant third at +13000 while Jaime Jaquez Jr. is +50000.
