These are not a straight ranking of quarterbacks, nor is it an objective list. Instead, it serves a very specific purpose.
These ratings indicate how valuable every quarterback currently on an NFL roster is against the spread.
For example, Patrick Mahomes is worth 6.5 points against the spread. If he were to miss a game, Carson Wentz would step in for the Chiefs. Wentz is worth zero points to the spread. Therefore, I would expect the spread to be adjusted by about 6.5 points if Wentz had to start in place of Mahomes. Of course, there would be other factors to take into account if that were to take place, but this is a good guideline.
While you may think these ratings are useful for the regular season, the best time to use them is during the preseason. Every day there is at least one preseason game, I will publish my QB charts that have the expected playing time for every team in action. The biggest edges to find in the preseason come down to quarterback play. When there's a noteworthy edge for one team under center, there's likely a betting edge to find.
So, without further adieu, here's how valuable all 117 quarterbacks that were on an NFL roster as of Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2:30 p.m. ET are.
