Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Against the Spread Pick
By John LanFranca
As a general rule of thumb, backing winning teams on the road when they are favored by more than a field goal against losing teams isn't necessarily a great way to consistently turn a profit.
In fact, if you blindly bet the underdog in this scenario over the past five seasons, you would have a positive return on investment in four of those seasons. Home 'dogs with a losing record of more than three points facing a team with a winning record are 80-59 (57.6%) over the last five years.
Baker Mayfield's passer rating this season when throwing from a clean pocket is 111.7. When he's faced pressure, his rating drops to 62.8.
The Cowboys defense must get pressure on the quarterback to stay in this game. Since the return of Micah Parsons in Week 10, the Cowboys lead the NFL in sacks with 24. Over that same span, they have generated 13 takeaways, which ranks third.
The key for the Cowboys' offense will once again be Rico Dowdle.
Dowdle has rushed for 100+ yards in three consecutive games, and he is the reason this offense can stay on track and ahead of the sticks. This isn't a case of the Cowboys running the ball late in games to maintain a lead — Dowdle is the difference maker for all four quarters that gives Cooper Rush a chance at success.
Dowdle took over the starting role in Week 9 and ranks second in the NFL in yards after contact since becoming the main cog in the backfield.
The Buccaneers rank just 21st in yards per carry against to opposing running backs, which will allow the Cowboys to remain in manageable third-down situations.
The Cowboys should be able to replicate a formula that has worked for them in recent weeks to keep this game close throughout.
Pick: Cowboys +4.5 (-112); Bet to +4
Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Over/Under Prediction
By Billy Ward
Until last week, it was easy to write off the Bucs offensive success as a product of various weak matchups. They averaged 28 points per game over a three week span against the Panthers, Gians, and Raiders.
Then in Week 15, they dropped 40 on the Chargers. The same Chargers who rank 3rd in the NFL in points per game allowed, and top ten in defenses DVOA.
Given their success there, the Cowboys defense shouldn’t be much of a problem. The only team they’ve held under 20 points in the last nine weeks was the Panthers. This week, they might even be without star pass rusher Micah Parson, who’s listed as questionable with an illness.
On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys offense has been functional with Cooper Rush at quarterback. They get a solid matchup of their own this week, especially considering Tampa will be without at least one, but possibly both, starting safeties.
I’m following the line movement here, which has pushed the total up from 46.5 to 48.0 I’d take the 48.5s available at other books if it moves even further, but obviously prefer the 48 at Caesars and BetMGM.
Pick: Over 47.5 (-110); Bet to Over 48
Mike Evans Player Props, Anytime Touchdown
By Grant Neiffer
Always a threat to score a toucdhown, Mike Evans should continue to see great volume on Sunday night, especially with Cade Otton's status in doubt.
Evans has nine touchdowns in 11 games this season, and while the Cowboys have been good vs. WR1s, they have their hands full with Trevon Diggs out for the season.
The Bucs have a high implied team total for SNF (26.5), and playing in a dome should only help Evans. I have Evans at over a 50% chance of scoring, making this a great bet at plus odds.
Pick: Mike Evans Anytime Touchdown (+105)
