Update: The Steelers have an 8% chance to make the NFL playoffs entering Week 17, according to Action Network's Predictive Analytics team.
Update: The Steelers have an estimated 7% chance to make the NFL playoffs entering Week 16. They are tied for the toughest remaining strength of schedule among playoff hopefuls.
Week 15 Update: The Steelers' loss massively hurts their playoff chances in a tight AFC race. They were one of six AFC teams with seven wins heading into the game, with only two likely to make the postseason. Two of those teams (the Bengals and Colts) already have a win in Week 15, with Indy also now holding a tiebreaker over Pittsburgh. The Steelers have a less than 10% chance to make the NFL playoffs after their loss Saturday. It's a significant drop from where they prior to Week 14 when they had a 58% chance to make the postseason.
Pittsburgh sits in the second wild card spot at the moment, but their success appears to be all smoke and mirrors. They’ve ranked near the top of our luck rankings all year long, but it’s run out lately with back-to-back losses to two of the league’s worst teams. They were outclassed 24-10 against the then 2-10 Cardinals before falling four days later to another 2-10 team, the Patriots.
The Steelers are also without Kenny Pickett, who injured his ankle in their loss to Arizona. He’s expected to be sidelined for another few weeks, making Mitch Trubisky the nominal starter. He struggled against the Patriots, completing 22 of 35 passes for just 190 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He did, however, run the ball eight times for 30 yards and a score.
Pittsburgh has a rough road ahead with the eighth-toughest schedule down the stretch. Their next two games are particularly crucial as they face two teams they’re fighting for a wild card spot with — the Colts and the Bengals. After that they visit a free-falling Seahawks team before closing it out against the Ravens, who are currently the top seed in the AFC. Action Network's Predictive Analytics team gives the Steelers a 29% chance to make the playoffs.
