The United States Men's National Team will try to rebound from their first loss of 2023 on Tuesday night in Nashville when they face a Ghana squad that also tasted defeat over the weekend.
The Americans started brightly through a brilliant Christian Pulisic goal, but were ultimately deservedly beaten 3-1 by Germany on Saturday afternoon in Connecticut.
Later that evening, Ghana were eventually outlasted by Mexico in a match that finished 2-0 in Philadelphia.
This is just these teams' fifth all-time meeting, and only the second friendly after the other three clashes came in World Cup competition.
Here is my preview ahead of USA vs Ghana in an international friendly.
USA
Much of the hype surrounding Saturday's match came from the prospect of Giovanni Reyna playing for manager Gregg Berhalter for the first time since an untoward saga involving both men following the 2022 World Cup. But the key man not in the squad was defensive midfielder Tyler Adams, who has had a setback in his recovery from a serious hamstring injury suffered in March.
The USMNT roster has depth in most positions, but there isn't really anyone who can match Adams' production as a midfield destroyer. That was evident from the start on Saturday. And things got considerably worse after Reyna — who is still working back from his own injury issue — departed for Luca de la Torre at halftime.
When it was over, a German squad that is not considered of the same vintage as those that won World Cups or European Championships had outshot the United States 19-6 and created five big chances to the Americans' one, according to FotMob.
Yunus Musah was the only player in the starting front six who played beyond the 75th minute, which could pave the way for Berhalter to avoid significant rotation in his starting lineup on Tuesday. That said, with only a bit more than 72 hours to recover — and a couple of flight hours thrown in — it wouldn't be completely surprising to see a more provisional lineup start the match on Tuesday night.
Ghana
The Black Stars are also dealing with some key injury absences, none bigger than Brighton fullback Tariq Lamptey, who was named to manager Chris Hughton's original roster for these games but did not dress in Saturday's loss to Mexico.
Veteran winger Andre Ayew is also out of the side as he remains a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Nottingham Forest.
And there's also maybe some sense Hughton had targeted the clash with the U.S. as the more important of his team's two Stateside friendlies after he chose to bring Jordan Ayew and Inaki Williams off the bench on Saturday.
This will be the final test for Hughton's side before they begin their 2026 World Cup Qualifying campaign next month against Madagascar and Comoros.

Pick & Prediction
Unlike Saturday's match, the U.S. is the better side. They'll be playing in a stronger home-field advantage as well, rather than in Connecticut where a healthy contingent of German supporters showed up.
And one trend that has proven relatively consistent during Berhalter's tenure is that his teams perform better in their second game of a window than their first.
But with Ghana's talent level and the absence of Tyler Adams in the American midfield — coupled with the context of a friendly and not a high-stakes qualifier — I think it's unlikely the Americans will feel comfortable defending a 1-0 lead.
So I can back playing a same-game parlay on the U.S. moneyline and the total going above 1.5 goals at +115 odds and an implied 46.5% probability. However, I wouldn't go any lower than this number.
Pick: Same-game parlay – USA and over 1.5 (+115 via Barstool Sportsbook)
