The quarterfinals from Wimbledon wrap up on Tuesday and we have a big tilt featuring a multiple-time semifinalist taking on the 2022 champion.
Here is my Rybakina – Svitolina preview along with my Rybakina vs Svitolinapick ahead of their Wimbledon quarterfinal match.
Rybakina Back on Track With Power-Based Game
Entering this match with a 39-7 record on the season, it may be odd to see a headline describing Rybakina as back on track.
That's more of a reference to her having withdrawn and retired already in tournaments this year – accounting for about 25% of her exits from events played. She's had varying illnesses and injuries dating back to last year and though it feels like we should be cautious trusting her, it does seem like after a few slow starts to matches she's really taken over when she finds her groove.
I don't think many need to be reminded of why she loves quicker court tournaments, with one of the best – if not the best – serve in women's tennis and plenty of firepower from the baseline.
Rybakina can also hit with a bit more margin than many who have to take bigger hacks and reduce their consistency to keep up. The raw pace she generates allows her to hit at bigger targets while still pushing opposition behind the baseline. Rybakina has struggled a bit here and there with unforced errors, but since being so precise isn't necessary with her game, when she settles in she's tended to course correct.
Svitolina Backing Up Last Year's Unexpected Wimbledon Run
Outside of Wimbledon, grass courts haven't been as kind to Svitolina as other surfaces. Yet on the biggest stage of them all, she's reached the quarterfinals in three of her last four appearances and a win on Wednesday gives her a third semifinal appearance in that same span.
A lot of that may have to do with her draws though, with a lot of relatively easy paths to this stage. She's mixed in wins against strong players like Maria Sakkari and Iga Swiatek, but it's rare to see her beat two tough opponents in the same fortnight in the English capital.
Good on Svitolina for taking advantage of who is on the other side of the net, and she's probably better equipped than she was eight years ago for success with a bit more aggression, but there's no getting around the fact that she's likely going to be outgunned in this match and bigger servers and strikers of the ball have given her immense trouble in the past.
Rybakina – Svitolina Pick
This is another match where if you don't have access to the -4, you may be better off going with the -4.5 rather than the -3.5. Sure, it's a pretty important distinction in tennis, but the price differential is so large, I'd rather sell the hook than buy it.
Rybakina is a level up from most of the players Svitolina has beaten and doesn't play the head-scratchingly error prone tennis that Ons Jabeur seems to play when the lights shine on her more brightly.
The pressure applied on return should be one-way traffic in Rybakina's favor, and considering the fact that she's looked much stronger since Wimbledon began, with the exception of one set where she lost the range on her groundstrokes, I would expect her to post a lopsided set or two more often than not against the Ukrainian.
Some may point to the evenly matched 2-2 head to head here, but those who do aren't likely to point out that only one match has taken place since 2021 (a time frame that has seen Rybakina become one of the top five players in the world). It was on Rybakina's least favorite surface and still resulted in a five game margin of victory at the French Open a few months back when she wasn't even at her best physically.
